Safety II: A dynamic systems approach to health care quality and safety

Drawing from ideas in complexity and systems theory, Safety II provides insights into how care quality and safety emerge from an organisation’s ability to flexibly adapt to variable conditions.

This short presentation will outline some of the ongoing work in Safety II across a range of contexts in health and social care and will argue that safety efforts should focus more on understanding everyday work rather than simply on investigating adverse events.

Conclusions will focus on suggested applications in the area of maternity care and for supporting physiological labour and birth.
